As a result of the damages caused by hurricane MITCH in 1998, our organization decided to develop a Center of Medical Assistance in the community of Chamelecón. Our purpose is to provide medical services to the families in this area because they live in extreme poverty. With this same project, we seek to implement special programs of infantile nutrition, STDs, dental hygiene, and donating blood. We hope to provide long-term solutions to the health problems for the problem of malnutrition.
At the moment, we have a general doctor who works from Monday to Friday for four hours daily, and three dentists who work five days a week for four hours daily.
We assist people with minimal economic resources. Depending on their situation, service and medicine is offered free of charge or at a low cost.
The medical center currently has many need, such as funding for a full-time doctor and more beds for patients. This past year we have made several improvements in the medical center, and we are looking to continually improve it.
